Waxing: Timing and Aftercare That Actually Matter

The timing around waxing matters as much as the waxing itself.

Waxing removes the top layer of protection skin has, briefly, and that changes how it reacts to sun and certain products for a short window before and after.

Sun exposure before and after

Freshly sun-exposed or sunburned skin is more sensitive to waxing, and freshly waxed skin is more sensitive to sun. Spacing these apart is a simple, worthwhile habit, especially in Utah's intense summer sun.

Skincare actives change the calculation

Strong exfoliants, retinoids and similar products make skin more reactive to waxing than usual. Mention what you are using regularly when you book, so your artist can advise on timing rather than finding out mid-appointment.

Timing before an event

If you are waxing ahead of a specific event, book with enough of a buffer that any temporary redness or sensitivity has settled by the day itself. Your artist can advise on a reasonable window for your skin.

Aftercare in the first day or two

Avoid direct sun, harsh products and anything abrasive on the area for a day or two afterward. Your artist should explain this without being asked.

Speak up about sensitivity

If you know your skin reacts strongly to waxing, or you are trying it for the first time, say so — a patch test on a small area is a reasonable ask before committing to a larger area.
